Marianne Sung

Artist member since 2021
Pro
Toronto, Ontario

Marianne is an emerging and self-taught Korean-Canadian artist.  Radiating warmth and light, her art is intended to spark feelings of magic while inspiring nostalgia. Her varied colours, shades, and marks emerge through her application of thin and transparent layers of acrylics and mixed media. She is primarily influenced by her deep connections to the places and things in her current home of Ontario, her upbringing in Québec and world travels. She also often uses neon hues to express the intersection between the natural and digital, blurring views of the real and unreal.

Currently, Marianne focuses on painting landscapes, especially trees to express themes of identity, belonging, interconnectedness and our need for community as a means for sustainability. Similar to humans, trees and flora have a higher survival rate growing and sharing in a supportive family or group. Trees communicate with and support each other, share nutrients with those who are sick or struggling. As well, humans have a symbiotic relationship with plant life as we are interdependent for our viability and growth. As trees face internal and external uncertainties, their resilience is continuously tested. In this time of increasing climate change and recent wildfires, the preservation of nature, our forests and communities have a heightened meaning.

Marianne has exhibited in numerous local gallery juried exhibits and at the Artist Project contemporary art fair in Toronto. In addition, her work has been featured in US based Create magazine, the Toronto Star and House & Home magazine.

Originally from Montréal, Marianne graduated McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce.  She subsequently earned her CPA/CA designation, as well as worked in auditing and management consulting before pursuing her passion for art. She now enjoys living and staying creative in Toronto.
